Abstract

Climate change presents a significant worldwide concern, and Indonesia is dedicated to attaining Net Zero Emissions (NZE) by 2060, with a specific objective for the industrial sector by 2050. The pulp and paper sector is the fourth-largest energy consumer in Indonesia and substantially contributes to national greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. PT BMS, an integrated paper packaging producer, reported yearly emission intensities that, in certain years, surpassed the national green industry benchmark of 1.4 tCO₂e/ton of product, highlighting the necessity for efficient carbon management. This study seeks to propose feasible, relevant, and economically viable carbon abatement options for PT BMS that are consistent with company objectives, regulatory mandates, and national decarbonization targets. The study utilizes a tripartite methodology: (1) evaluating existing environmental performance by quantifying Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions from 2016 to 2023; (2) identifying prospective abatement strategies and appraising them via the Marginal Abatement Cost Curve (MACC) framework; and (3) determining viable strategies through consultations with corporate decision-makers, amalgamating both financial and environmental factors. The findings indicate that energy intensity, production efficiency, and operational procedures influence PT BMS's greenhouse gas emissions. Numerous cost-effective or negative-cost abatement strategies, such as enhancing equipment efficiency, optimizing processes, and adopting renewable energy, can substantially diminish emissions while decreasing operational expenses. The report indicates that implementing these solutions will enable PT BMS to comply with green industry norms, improve energy efficiency, saving cost and sustain competitiveness. According to local constraints and market dynamics, the proposed framework provides a replicable model for other energy-intensive businesses in emerging nations. Keywords: Carbon management, greenhouse gas emissions, pulp and paper industry, marginal abatement cost curve, Indonesia, Net Zero Emissions
