Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly disrupted global industries, and the shipping and logistics industry was no exception, facing a series of financial challenges from 2020 to 2022. This study examines the financial health and performance of PT Samudera Indonesia Tbk (SMDR) during this period, comparing its resilience and adaptability to pre-pandemic conditions. By analyzing the company's financial statements and key performance indicators from both the pre-pandemic (2018-2019) and pandemic years (2020-2022), the study evaluates several financial metrics, including Liquidity, Solvency, Activity, Profitability ratios, and Altman Z score to measure bankruptcy risk. The Liquidity ratios, measured by the Current and Quick ratios, showed significant improvement during the pandemic, suggesting that the company became better equipped to meet its short-term obligations through its liquid assets. In terms of Profitability, the Return on Equity and Net Profit Margin ratios indicated that SMDR managed to retain a larger portion of its revenue as profit despite the challenging global environment. The Activity ratios, particularly Total Asset and Inventory Turnover, demonstrated that the company maintained an aggressive and agile approach to revenue generation from its assets. Conversely, the Solvency ratios, such as Debt-to-Equity and Debt-to-Asset ratios, did not show significant changes between the pre pandemic and pandemic periods, indicating that SMDR continued to rely on a consistent approach to leverage debt and equity for financing. An assessment of the company's financial health using the Altman Z-score showed an initial decline in the years leading up to the pandemic, reflecting a higher risk of bankruptcy. However, there was a steady recovery from 2020 onwards, with a notable improvement in financial stability in the subsequent years, indicating SMDR's successful adaptation to the crisis. The study reveals how PT Samudera Indonesia Tbk navigated the financial challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, offering insights into its strategic decisions and operational resilience. The company's ability to improve liquidity, maintain profitability, and adapt its financial structure demonstrates its long-term sustainability despite the economic disruptions caused by the pandemic.
