Abstract

Mining is among the most asset-intensive industries there is, yet the Maintenance, Repair, and Operations (MRO) system that keeps its equipment running is rarely examined. Earlier studies tend to treat maintenance management, spare-part inventory, cost control, and digital integration as separate problems, which leaves a gap in understanding how they jointly shape supply chain performance. This study therefore asks how the MRO system is structured, which KPIs are used to judge it, what barriers hold it back, and how well its information is integrated. The objective is to evaluate MRO implementation and its impact on supply chain performance at a large-scale mine in a remote part of Kalimantan, Indonesia. Five subject-matter experts were purposively selected: a maintenance engineer (12 years' experience), a procurement officer (13), a warehouse controller (15), a supply planner (11), and a reliability engineer (13), aged between 43 and 50. Each owns a different link in the MRO chain, so together they cover the workflow end to end, from failure detection through purchase to issue. Written semi-structured interviews were triangulated with company documents and site observation, then analyzed thematically in NVivo 12 within an interpretivist case study design. The findings show a system that is sound on paper but bypassed under pressure: when equipment stops, people phone the warehouse rather than trust the screen. Beneath almost every symptom sits poor data quality: duplicate material codes, stock mismatches, hurried failure records. The study concludes that data governance, not new technology, is the first fix.
