Abstract
The COVID-19 outbreak had a disastrous impact on the global banking sectors. At its lowest point in march 2020, the KOSPI had dropped by around 33% from its peak earlier in the year. To overcome the crisis, the banking sector needs to analyze the effect of COVID-19 and differences between before and during period. The purpose of this study is to analyze the difference of stock return, how financial performance and macroeconomic indicators affect stock return, and the difference of effect on the stock returns of four prime commercial banks in South Korea before and during COVID-19. This study used a quantitative method by collecting secondary data from quarterly financial reports on prime commercial banks during the period 2011-2022. The variables in this study were CAR, NPL, LDR, ROA, NIM, IR, IF, GDP Growth, EXR, MR and SR. This study was analyzed using statistical methods, namely t-tests and panel data regression. Eviews 12 and SPSS 25 are used to analyze the data in this study. The results of this study are (1) non-parametric test shows no significant difference on stock return before and during COVID-19. (2) only four factors (IF, GDPG, EXR, and MR) have significant effect on stock return of four prime commercial banks in South korea. (3) COVID-19 era only moderates the effect of exchange rate on stock return, not the effect of others. The results of this study help researchers and practitioners understand how the microeconomics and macroeconomic factors affect banking industry in the south Korea before and during COVID-19 and managers to make strategy to improve the performance of the bank. Investors who want to invest in the banking sector are encouraged to analyze and closely monitor the macroeconomic factors such as inflation rate, GDP growth, exchange rate, and market return because they have a positive effect on the return of their investment.
