Abstract

In the context of the economic globalization, where the competitiveness in footwear industry is becoming severe, the footwear industry in Indonesia is trying to maintain competitiveness in the market. In a footwear manufacturing company the high turnover rate which can be influence by employee engagement not only became an obstacle in their effort of enhancing their competitiveness. However, few studies have investigated the intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation influencing employee engagement among employees in the footwear manufacturing sector in Indonesia. Therefore, this study aims to examine the effects of intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation on employee engagement, as well as the moderating effect of generation gap (gen MZ, Gen Y and Gen X). Utilizing a quantitative approach with a questionnaire-based survey, the author collected data from a sample of 275 full-time employees working in a footwear manufacturing company in Indonesia. The statistical package for the social sciences (SPSS) and partial least square structural equation model (PLS-SEM) were employed for data analysis. The results reveal that extrinsic motivation affects significantly employee engagement in all generation, but intrinsic motvation affects significantly in generation X, it does not been found statistical significance in generation MZ and Y. Additionally, no moderating effect was observed between the independent and dependent variables. This study provides theoretical insights on relationship between the motivation and employee engagement and offers managerial implications for increasing employee engagement. Future studies are recommended to other manufacturing and service company as comparative analysis, and also the effect of motivation on other aspects of the companies like financial performance, quality of the products is recommended.
