Abstract

Company background : PT Tri Dharma Wisesa (TDW), brake system manufacturer established in 1981 and begin its commercial production in 1985, with technical assistance agreement with akebono brake industry Co., Ltd. Japan. Since December 1996 TDW become a foreign Investment after akebono bought 30% os its shares and it plans to export its products to ASEAN countries such as Malaysia, Thailand and Philippines. Problem Statement : Due to the fact that world competitiveness will be accelerating, specifically in the fact world competitiveness will be accelerating, specifically in the component manufacturing industry in the region, has led TDW to raise several important issues regarding; how TDW will position itself at the time beyond 2000 ?; is TDW ready to face more open and competitive market in the region ?; how TDW will anticipate worldwide strategy of Akebono as its partner ?; in addition to these issues, TDW should evaluate its current strength and weaknesses and also the threat and opportunities that the company is facing in the future. Objective of Study : main objective to develop strategic scenario planning that intended to give a vision on how TDW should positioned itself at the time beyond 2000. By developing a strategic scenario planning that gives vision to TDW position, we would be able to have a clear picture on how we will determine the competitiveness of the functional area and what action should be taken in order to achieve its goals and missions. Framework of analysis : methods of analysis for the formulation of strategy proposed of this projects will based on these analysis; asses SWOT analysis, identify key success factors, analyze value chain management, Boston consulting group model matrix and E-S-O-P balance scorecard to measure current performance and what the future expectation of future expectation will be introduced in the recommendation. This project will cover all aspect those are logistic, human resources, management information systems, plant operation, engineering, production planning control, product system, quality assurance, and maintenance. Some financial aspects will be discussed, but not thoroughly, because of some confidentiality in the data is a very sensitive issue for the company. After analyzing all aspects using those framework mentioned above, in the recommendation section, proposal for developing strategy to maintain domestic & leverage export market and action plan will be suggested. Recommendation and implementation : Craft a strategy, current situation, the foreign partner (Akebono) is having total control of the company, from raw materials to end market the product. This paper will suggest how local partner should build a competitive advantage, Current TDW's competitive advantage is mainly come from its import license. TDW needs to build competitive advantage by linkage its strength as ASTRA related company. Unfortunately ASTRA itself have not so much bargaining power to its principal. Competitive advantage is how to achieve lowest cost for the added value through efficiency and competence of regional market. Definitions of (New) strategy and develop check list items to manage.
