Abstract

Computerization within IPMI has been initiated only for marketing, finance and library that covers mainly for administration purposes. The current application systems have been developed piecemeal and are not integrated. These make it difficult to share information across organizational units and has resulted in the redundant data. The management of IPMI wants to avoid those problems and wants to update the information system technology for one of its competitive advantage for facing a challenge to its position among the top 20 business school in the Asia-pacific region by the year 2000. It has therefore decided to use of GFP to develop information system technology plan for IPMI. Information system technology plan must be derive and support the long-term strategic business objectives of IPMI. We are therefore, using strategic information value analysis (SIVA) methodology to develop information system technology plan for IPMI. The analysis of information requirement for IPMI must be based on a sound understanding of the fundamental business functions and not be dependent on organizational structure due to the functional model does not represent who carries outs the business function and organization structure can change anytime. The application architecture is blueprint for information system technology based on IPMI's level-two business function. A total of 82 level-two functions have been analyzed and 18 application modules, which make up the applications architecture to support these functions. The application modules can be grouped into nine major application systems as follows : student services system (SSS), marketing information system (MKS), Project management system (PJS). feedback database system (FDS), library database system (LDS), course management system (CMS), financial and accounting system (FAS), executive information system (EIS), External Database system (EDS). A configuration of hardware, software and communication network is needed to implementation the application architecture. Conceptual technology architecture describes the desired configuration of tools to work with sources of information and communication with other for the long-term and its designed independent of physical technology architecture. The implementation plan can be broadly divided into three phases over the next five years. All major nine applications should be ready by the end of 2000, including complete setting up the tools to communicate with outsider and learning distance by using teleconferencing should be ready the rest of next two years. To accommodate the planned application development and implementation schedule, we recommend that existing role of computer section should considered be expand to 5 by the end of 2022 and reported directly to executive director. Therefore, the expanded department should be re-named MIS or IT department and restructured to reflect a sharper separation of development and operations activities.
