Abstract

Basic material firms in Indonesia face significant challenges related to fluctuating raw material prices and regulatory uncertainties, which impact their profitability and operational stability. Additionally, competition from both local and international players intensifies the pressure to innovate and improve efficiency while adhering to environmental standards. This research examines the influence of CEO characteristics as proxied by CEO family, CEO Education, CEO Age, and CEO ownership on strategic risk taking. We also examine the impact of the number of female directors on strategic risk taking. The research uses data from companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) in 2019-2023 which published financial reports in those 5 years. The total number of observations was 328 observations consisting of 82 companies which were tested using multiple linear regression to test the direct effect with SPSS software. The study found that The Family CEO has a negative effect on strategic risk taking, CEO Education has a negative effect on strategic risk taking, CEO Age has a negative effect on strategic risk taking, CEO Ownership has a positive effect on strategic risk taking, and Number of Female Directors has a positive effect on strategic risk taking.
